Call for Papers: AIDS in Culture II (coming soon)

AIDS in Culture I took place on Friday 10th December - Sunday 12th December 2004 in Mexico City in the CNDH (National Center for Human Rights).

Versión en Español

This conference arranged annually by Enkidu Magazine in Mexico City with the support and participation of CENSIDA and CNDH, seeks to examine issues relating to AIDS in culture across a wide range of perspectives. The conferences bring together people working in all relevant disciplines, activists, professionals, academics and promoting innovative multidisciplinary and multicultural exchange and dialogue.

AIDS in CULTURE I (10 Dec. – 12 Dec. 2004 in the Centro Nacional de los Derechos Humanos – CENADEH, Mexico City) was an incredible success. Alltogether we had 52 participants representing a wide range of academic disciplines as well as artists, activists and other highly interesting individuals who shared their research, their art, their visions and their ideas with us. The discussions after the presentations were intriguing and exiting. Among the delegates there was an impressive level of participation: 14 different universities, two government agencies and five NGO’s were represented, among them Clermont-Ferrand, Georgetown, San Franscisco, New York, Goethe in Frankfurt, UAEM-Toluca.

CENADEH did a great effort to ensure that everything ran smoothly. All technical equipment was provided when necessary and the infrastructure never failed. Our conference stimulated interesting discussions, presented innovative cutting edge research from several disciplines and diverse and exiting new perspectives on AIDS not just as a virus and a disease but as a cultural phenomenon, which has had a profound impact on our societies far beyond itself.

The papers presented at the conference will be edited and published as a book, both in an English and a Spanish edition. Abstracts of the conference papers will be made available in the following days. Pictures from the conference are available here.

As you can see, Francisco Javier Ojeda, our official photographer and a wonderful artist, did an excellent job.The extraordinary exhibition by Rolando de la Rosa in the auditorium received several compliments from the delegates and stimulated an exiting exchange on Sunday when he gave his speech about the project. The artistic program by Humberto Alvarez, Artemisa Teatro and Horacio Franco was also highly appreciated and received favourable comments.

Aids and Culture II will take place in December 2005 in Puerto Vallarta. More information and the first call for papers will be published on the web page in January. It will also be the first international Enkidu conference to take place outside Mexico City.
